Briefing Note on Prioritizing Safety and Support in Digital Reporting of Gender-Based Violence - GBV AoR Helpdesk 2024
31 May, 2024
Digital tools are more accessible than ever, which has led to a surge of technological solutions aimed at improving access to and quality of services in humanitarian settings. One area where this trend is evident is the response to gender-based violence (GBV). Digital tools have emerged as a potential game-changer for survivor reporting; however, like any innovation, these tools carry both benefits and risks. There are value propositions to digitally reporting GBV, but the potential for retaliation, stigma and loss of survivors’ trust adds a layer of complexity that requires diligent consideration. This briefing note explores these complexities. It begins with a description of digital reporting and how it may be used in relation to making and collecting reports of GBV cases. It examines some of the key ethical considerations linked to establishing and using digital reporting for GBV, using a simulated reporting platform to highlight common pitfalls in designing safe and effective GBV r...
Benefits of Gender Equality and Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response Programming in Schools and Educational Settings - GBV AoR Helpdesk 2025
03 Jul, 2025
This evidence digest examines available documentation on three main issues: 1) whether and how targeted school-based GBV prevention and response initiatives can reduce boys’ perpetration of violence, in the present and into adulthood; 2) whether and how targeted school-based GBV prevention and response initiatives can decrease exposure to violence for girls, both in the short and long term; and 3) any evidence of improvements in educational outcomes for children who participate in school-based GBV prevention and response programs. The research is presented in the form of an annotated bibliography that is organized in three main sections according to these topics. Each section begins with an overall summary of the findings for the specific topic, followed by the bibliographic entries presented alphabetically by author. The bibliography comprises the results of a preliminary online desk review of research published globally over the past 15 years, with particular attention to case stu...

Responding to violence against women based on their diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions – an annotated bibliography of resources - GBV AoR Helpdesk 2021
13 May, 2021
Responding to violence against women based on their diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions – an annotated bibliography of resources All women and girls face oppression, discrimination and marginalization based on gender inequality, but not all women and girls experience oppression and inequality in a homogeneous way. Oppression may be compounded by their sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity. Despite there being a broad understanding that women and girls with diverse SOGIEs are at heightened risk of violence due to multiple and intersecting factors, there is limited evidence and documented practice of responses to this violence. This learning brief assembles resources regarding response that originate from a wide pool of actors including UN agencies, INGOs, World Bank and other Non-humanitarian sources.
