This paper focusses on the issue of technology in GBV prevention, mitigation and response in emergencies and aims to improve knowledge and understanding of good practices and lessons learned in harnessing technology to improve efforts to address GBV in humanitarian action. The paper was first published in 2019. The information and analysis were developed through review of recent literature and evidence on the use of technology-related innovations in GBV programming in humanitarian and non-humanitarian contexts, semi-structured interviews and correspondence with technology, GBViE and other specialists, and analysis of case studies collated based on a framework for enquiry. The paper was updated in December 2021 with a review of the latest literature and evidence to reflect recent developments in technology and GBV, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, WHO released a curriculum designed to provide health-care providers, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with a foundation for responding to domestic/ intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women. The curriculum seeks to build skills and to address providers’ attitudes towards survivors of violence. In this webinar, we will be joined by Avni Amin who will review the key components of this exciting new resource. We will also be joined by WHO colleagues based in regional and country offices who will share some of their experiences using these materials to train health providers in a variety of humanitarian settings. This evidence digest will explore emerging research on the nature and effectiveness of efforts to work with men and boys to promote gender equality and prevent gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls in emergencies, with a focus on 1) what we know about this programming; and 2) what evidence says about how best to engage men and boys, and what practices to avoid. Links to relevant research, guidelines, tools and resources follow at the end.
