International Medical Corps has implemented GBV prevention and response programs in Somali refugee camps in the Dollo region of Ethiopia since 2009 and in Gambella since 2014. The existing GBV program was adapted to respond to the emergency and has since expanded to meet the needs of the increased refugee population.

GBV Advisor

The GBV Advisor will provide technical support and guidance to the design and implementation of GBV prevention and response programs, with a focus on Francophone countries in Africa. The GBV Advisor will support relevant emergency response operations. The GBV Advisor will also contribute to global projects and resource development, inter-agency GBV coordination and representation, and advocacy initiatives.

Historically, because men’s power over women denied them the right to participate in the public space, the cultivation of safe, women-only spaces has been a vital counterspace created for women to network and for feminist movements to organize. These spaces and the activists working within them facilitated women to recognize their own agency and power for change (power within), their power to organize themselves to articulate the changes they wanted to make (power to), and collectively transform the systems that oppressed them (power with).
