Years of conflict continue to cause crippling humanitarian consequences in the Middle East and North Africa, or Arab States region, which are further exacerbated by macroeconomic decline, the effects of COVID-19, and the climate crisis. The effects of conflict are compounded by recurring climatic shocks and extreme weather conditions, including floods and extended dry conditions -  seven countries in the region face a heightened risk of disaster related to extreme natural events. Protracted crises are common; five of the region’s Humanitarian Response Plans have been in place for more than five years. Pre-existing high levels of Gender-Based Violence - regional data shows that on average 37% of women across the Arab region have experienced some form of GBV in their lifetime - are exacerbated by multiple layers of conflict and disaster. Addressing GBV is critical in each context, across the development-humanitarian-peace-building nexus. National actors play a critical role in coordination, in collaboration with UNFPA, the global lead agency for GBV in emergencies.
