‘Women’s Roles in Coordination during Displacement’ Webinar
On 7 November at 12am (CEST), the Participation in Displacement Working Group of the Global Camp Coordination and Camp Management Cluster will be organizing a webinar titled ‘Women’s Role in Coordination during Displacement’, based on research conducted by Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). Anna Hirsch-Holland (CM specialist, NRC) will share findings and recommendations from her research on methods for enhancing the participation and protection of displaced women and girls in various displacement settings – formal camps, informal settlements, and out of camp urban areas, conducted over the last five months. Specifically, the research focused on two components of women’s participation and protection in the framework of camp management activities: first, women’s role in humanitarian coordination; and second, the role of older women in solving problems in the community – including with regards to women’s safety in the home. As well as conducting an extensive desk...
Webinar: Caring for Women Subjected to Violence: A WHO Curriculum for Training Health-Care Providers

The curriculum seeks to build skills and to address providers’ attitudes towards survivors of violence. Webinar: Women and Girls Safe Spaces Toolkit
Considered a core element of GBV programming in the GBViE Minimum Standards, Women and Girls’ Safe Spaces (WGSS) are a structured place where women’s and adolescent girls’ physical and emotional safety is respected and where they are supported through processes of empowerment. The new resource “Women and Girls Safe Spaces: A Toolkit For Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in Humanitarian Settings” co-created by the International Rescue Committee and International Medical Corps, fills a critical gap in existing guidance by offering a global blueprint for programming which harmonizes the approach used by GBV practitioners while accounting for women and girl-led processes and contextual differences in humanitarian settings. This webinar will introduce the toolkit by presenting the core programming principles, approaches and strategies fundamental for cultivating safe and empowering spaces for women and girls which define WGSS programming...
International Day to End Obstetric Fistula
Obstetric fistula is one of the most serious and tragic injuries that can occur during childbirth. It is a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum caused by prolonged, obstructed labour without treatment. The condition typically leaves women incontinent, and as a result they are often shunned by their communities. Sufferers often endure depression, social isolation and deepening poverty. Many women live with the condition for years – or even decades – because they cannot afford to obtain treatment. An estimated 2 million women in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Arab region, and Latin America and the Caribbean are living with this injury, and some 50,000 to 100,000 new cases develop worldwide each year. Most fistulae occur among women living in poverty in cultures where a woman’s status and self-esteem may depend almost entirely on her marriage and ability to bear children. Yet fistula is almost entirely preventable. Its persistence is a sign that health systems are f...
Webinar: Utilizing Cash and Voucher Assistance within Gender-based Violence Case Management to Support Crisis-Affected Populations in Ecuador
With support from Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Women’s Refugee Commission, CARE, Fundacion Quimera and The Latin American Platform of Sex Workers (PLAPERTS) partnered to advance the Call to Action Roadmap in Ecuador by strengthening the capacity of GBV and CVA service providers to leverage CVA within case management services in the prevention of and response to GBV for crisis-affected populations. This project leveraged two key resources in the integration of CVA and GBV in El Oro province: The Toolkit for Optimizing Cash-based Interventions for Protection from Gender-based Violence: Mainstreaming GBV Considerations in CBIs and Utilizing Cash in GBV Response and the Cash & Voucher Assistance and Gender-Based Violence Compendium: Practical Guidance for Humanitarian Practitioners. One hundred GBV clients (including survivors and individuals at risk) were supported with cash transfers within GBV case management based on rolling case disclosure. Partners conducted monitoring ...
Webinar: Feminist Approaches to Mental Health Care for GBV Survivors
Join the GBV AoR Community of Practice and the GBViE Helpdesk for a preliminary overview of basic principles and approaches to feminist-informed mental health treatment for GBV survivors. This webinar is to support those working with GBV survivors in humanitarian settings. Many approaches that GBV specialists currently use when engaging with survivors reflect feminist methodologies, for example, the survivor-centered approach. Yet, there is a gap in guidance from humanitarian settings on what it means to apply an explicitly feminist approach to mental health and psychosocial support interventions, and why it matters in working with survivors of GBV. In this webinar, the host, Jeanne Ward from the GBViE Helpdesk will be briefly presenting key points from a GBV AoR Helpdesk review of Feminist Approaches to Specialized Mental Health Care for GBV Survivors, and then we will hear from three experts about their experience applying feminist princi...
MS 3: Staff Care and Support: Combatting burnout and vicarious traumatization for GBV staff in the time of COVID
MS 3: Staff Care and Support: Combatting burnout and vicarious traumatization for GBV staff in the time of COVID Effective GBV programming depends on putting together a dedicated staff[1]who have specialized knowledge, skills and attitudes. Working with GBV survivors can be particularly stressful and it is common for staff to experience everyday stress, cumulative stress, burnout, and critical incident stress. Vicarious/secondary trauma, typically a cumulative process that builds over time after prolonged exposure to other people’s suffering, is also a risk and may contribute to a deterioration of staff morale and increased turnover in the GBV staff. In this minimum standard, it is recommended that GBV coordinators and managers should be aware of their staff’s stress levels, and establish routine mechanisms for acknowledging and supporting staff safety and well-being. Over time, without appropriate support and supervision, GBV staff may begin to feel overwhelmed and tired, and ...
