Webinar: Transcending Gender Norms: Using gender transformative approaches in Women and Girls’ Safe Spaces in Humanitarian Settings
Background: In humanitarian settings, gender inequality, one of the root causes of Gender-based Violence, remains the greatest structural barrier to women’s and girls’ participation. GBV practitioners seek to transform these gender hierarchies which legitimize and perpetuate violence against women and girls entangled in conflicts, disasters and displacement through their programming. Women’s and Girls’ Safe Spaces (WGSS) are used commonly to deliver GBV programming in humanitarian emergencies worldwide and represent a place where women and girls can find safety, community, and healing and work together toward common and personal objectives and empowerment. These spaces offer women and girls unique opportunities to rebuild the social and safety structures lost due to emergencies, cultivate valuable life skills, and link GBV survivors to specialized support. The 2019 Women and Girls Safe Space Toolkit outlined five spec...

Directrices Interagenciales Para la Gestion de Casos de VBG - 2017
06 May, 2022
TIP SHEET: Working safely and effectively with linguistic and cultural mediators in GBViE programming - GBV AoR Helpdesk 2022
13 Dec, 2022
In many contexts where we work, implementing GBViE activities safely for GBV survivors and women and girls at risk of GBV will require attention and resources to overcome language barriers. It is necessary that women and girls who disclose difficult or traumatic experiences can do so using a language in which they are comfortable. This support is provided by interpreters.
TIP SHEET: Top Tips for Integrating Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) Activities for Women and Girls into Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS) - GBV AoR Helpdesk 2022
13 Dec, 2022
Millions of women and girls are unable to manage their menstrual cycle in a dignified, healthy way. The onset of menstruation (or periods as they can be known) is a new phase and can bring with it new risks to the lives of adolescent girls. Many girls face stigma, harassment and social exclusion during menstruation. Gender inequality, discrimination, social norms, cultural taboos, poverty and lack of basic services like toilets and sanitary products can all cause menstrual health and hygiene needs to go unmet. When this happens it restricts women and girls’ mobility and personal choices. It affects attendance in school and participation in community life. It also compromises their safety, causing additional stress and anxiety. These challenges are particularly acute in humanitarian crises. Period poverty is the lack of access to menstrual hygiene information, products, and toilets- forcing women and girls to risk their health, and miss out on education and employment opportunities. ...
Mainstream GBV in the collection, analysis and sharing of DTM data guidance - 2018
10 Jul, 2019
The Gender-Based Violence Area of Responsibility (GBV AoR), the Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CP AoR) and the IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) have been working closely together to mainstream GBV in the collection, analysis and sharing of DTM data. The objective of this collaboration is to improve the effectiveness and speed of GBV risk mitigation and response in emergencies, by ensuring that decision makers have access to useful data in a timely manner. This initiative is aligned with the BPRM’s Safe from the Start initiative and the multi-stakeholder Call to Action initiative launched by the UK Government, which aim to improve the effectiveness and timeliness of GBV risk mitigation and response from the onset of emergencies.
