Examining Women and Girls' Safe Spaces in Humanitarian Contexts: Research Findings from Northwest Syria and South Sudan
Examining Women and Girls' Safe Spaces in Humanitarian Contexts: Research Findings from Northwest Syria and South Sudan Despite the widespread application of women and girls’ safe spaces (WGSS) in humanitarian crises, there has been little rigorous evidence of the impact and effectiveness of this programming approach in participants’ lives. Our new research suggests that participating in WGSS programs was associated with higher gender-based violence service knowledge and utilization, and more gender equitable attitudes. The study also found that WGSS are a vital entry point through which women and girls can broaden their social networks and form significant relationships outside of their households. The full research report and a policy brief can be downloaded via the links below. Please share with your networks. CARE will be hosting a webinar to discuss this report at 9am EST on Wednesday, August 18th. An invite is below and attached—all are welcome! Report available ...

Empowered Aid's Toolkit for Planning and Monitoring Safer Aid Distributions
Please join us for the virtual launch of Empowered Aid's Toolkit for Planning and Monitoring Safer Aid Distributions on Monday, July 12th at 8am EST / 3pm EEST & EAT. The Toolkit is the result of collective work undertaken by the Empowered Aid team and partners in Lebanon and Uganda, to apply refugee women and girls' findings on SEA risk and recommendations to reduce them, from the first phase of our research. Their expertise was used to adapt how distributions were conducted and monitored, in seven pilots across the two countries. Findings show how listening to women and girls can support aid actors to more proactively and accountably mitigate SEA risks. The Toolkit, along with reports from the pilots on which it is based, will be available on the Empowered Aid resources webpage from Monday. During the launch, we will review the contents of the toolkit, hear case studies from those who used it, share next steps, and host a Q&A. ...

Intimate Partner Violence and Forced Displacement: From Research to Action
Forced displacement is on the rise. At the end of 2020, there were over 80 million forcibly displaced persons worldwide, doubling since 2010. Although commitments to addressing the crisis are growing, knowledge gaps surrounding the impacts of forced displacement persist, especially in terms of how men and women are affected differently. The World Bank’s Gender Dimensions of Forced Displacement program seeks to bridge some of these gaps by studying how gender inequality interacts with and compounds forced displacement. In the first of four webinars presenting GDFD research findings, World Bank Senior Gender-based Violence Specialist Diana Arango and Harvard’s Dr. Jocelyn Kelly present research on the heightened risks of intimate partner violence among displaced women in Colombia, the DRC, and Liberia. These novel studies shed light on the relationship between instability and conflict in the community and violence in the home and point to critical policy implications for protecting women...
