Multiple forms of GBV are being reported, with particularly high insecurity and risk for women and girls on the move, at border crossing points and transit/collective centres, and in bomb shelters. This includes reports of intimate partner violence, sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, sexual violence (including conflict-related sexual violence), and economic abuse. There is a high risk of trafficking for sexual exploitation at borders where registration is patchy, little control of documents, and young women are often not accompanied by other family member.

Current events globally such as the escalating effects of climate change, the war in Ukraine, and the COVID-19 pandemic are creating an exceptional risk of food insecurity across many parts of the world, prompting the UN Secretary General to issue a dire warning in March 2022 about an impending possibility of “a hurricane of hunger and a meltdown of the global food system.”1 Evidence shows that this cataclysm of food insecurity will impact the lives of women and girls disproportionately. According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), women around the world are more likely than men to experience moderate or severe food insecurity, an issue that appears in recent years to be on the rise. 2, 3 As food insecurity continues to increase, so may this food-related gender gap.

The symposium aims to bring together practitioners in the field of GBV and Child Protection, including those organizations focused on children and adolescents, researchers, academicians, programme implementers and policy makers. These individuals are at the forefront of leading, researching, engaging with and/or implementing programs that provide response and prevention services to male child and adolescent survivors of gender-based violence. The purpose is to facilitate the exchange and share knowledge, experiences, and learnings, and collectively identify concrete actions to enhance response and prevention efforts.
