Annotated Bibliography: Stigma and Gender-Based Violence - GBV AoR Helpdesk 2025
14 Aug, 2025
Stigma plays a powerful and often overlooked role in shaping the experiences of survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). This annotated bibliography explores available evidence on how stigma impacts survivors and contributes to the persistence and normalization of GBV in emergency contexts. The first section presents research in terms of “levels”, or sites, where GBV-related stigma occurs, from GBV survivors’ own internalized stigma, to institutional stigma (particularly in relation to GBV service providers), to societal-level stigma that reflects and reinforces stigmatizing social norms. The bibliography then offers a section on frameworks and models for understanding and measuring stigma and concludes with a section on programmatic guidance on GBV-related stigma-reduction strategies.
Mainstream GBV in the collection, analysis and sharing of DTM data guidance - 2018
10 Jul, 2019
The Gender-Based Violence Area of Responsibility (GBV AoR), the Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CP AoR) and the IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) have been working closely together to mainstream GBV in the collection, analysis and sharing of DTM data. The objective of this collaboration is to improve the effectiveness and speed of GBV risk mitigation and response in emergencies, by ensuring that decision makers have access to useful data in a timely manner. This initiative is aligned with the BPRM’s Safe from the Start initiative and the multi-stakeholder Call to Action initiative launched by the UK Government, which aim to improve the effectiveness and timeliness of GBV risk mitigation and response from the onset of emergencies.

TIP SHEET: Working safely and effectively with linguistic and cultural mediators in GBViE programming - GBV AoR Helpdesk 2022
13 Dec, 2022
In many contexts where we work, implementing GBViE activities safely for GBV survivors and women and girls at risk of GBV will require attention and resources to overcome language barriers. It is necessary that women and girls who disclose difficult or traumatic experiences can do so using a language in which they are comfortable. This support is provided by interpreters.
