This report examines how flooding, induced by climate change, disproportionately affects women and girls and increases their risk of experiencing GBV. The report has a particular focus on the Eastern and Southern Africa region. It identifies effective emergency preparedness and response strategies, particularly in the Eastern and Southern African region. It provides information that is useful to humanitarians, as well as development actors, working in flood-prone contexts.

The Mozambique GBV AoR in collaboration with GBV AoR partners conducted a mix-method GBV qualitative analysis in Cabo Delgado province with the aim to fill existing data gaps. The analysis of this report drew on 32 partner safety audits FGDs, key informant interviews (KIIs), and protection monitoring and hotline user reports, covering IDP sites across eight districts of Cabo Delgado including Chiure, Ibo, Macomia, Marrupa, Metuge, Montepuez, Palma, and Quissanga.
GBV risk mitigation in CVA programming: Key takeaways from a UNFPA regional Latin American workshop

In May 2024 UNFPA held a 2-day regional workshop Panama to enhance collaboration and skills related to the mitigation of GBV risks in CVA interventions in Latin America. The workshop brought together 24 GBV and CVA experts, including GBV specialists, GBV coordinators and CWG coordinators under the two regional coordination mechanisms (Regional Inter-Agency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela and the IASC Cluster System) and belonging to the six countries that have an existing and active CWG (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, and Peru) as well as regional GBV coordinators and specialists. The objective of the workshop was twofold: Enable the exchange of key information and experiences related to GBV risk mitigation in CVA programming between countries, particularly as CVA use grows in the region. Esta bibliografía comentada provee información sobre recursos técnicos globales sobre Violencia Basada en Género (VBG) en Emergencias que han sido traducidos al español. También proporciona una revisión de los recursos de VBG a nivel regional y nacional que se han producido en América Latina y el Caribe (LAC)1. En estos países, los principales idiomas de trabajo de las/os trabajadoras/es de primera línea son el español (la mayor parte de América Latina) y el inglés (la mayor parte del Caribe). Si bien, en algunos países de la región también se habla portugués, holandés y francés, así como dialectos e idiomas indígenas, esta bibliografía comentada, está centrada en los recursos disponibles en español e inglés, lo que beneficiará directamente a especialistas en asuntos de VBG, como trabajadoras/es sociales, trabajadoras/es de salud mental y apoyo psicosocial, voluntarias/os y organizaciones de la sociedad civil que trabajan para prevenir y responder a la VBG.

This practical guidance for private accommodation hosts is part of a series of knowledge products produced by the GBV AoR Helpdesk which aim to support the mitigation of GBV risks faced by women and girls’ refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. It contains guidance and tips for private accommodation hosts that will help them to mitigate GBV risks for Ukrainian refugee women and girls staying in their accommodation. The paper outlines the GBV risks faced by Ukrainian women and girls and practical DOs and DON’Ts for their hosts to apply which help to mitigate these risks.

Responding to violence against women based on their diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions – an annotated bibliography of resources All women and girls face oppression, discrimination and marginalization based on gender inequality, but not all women and girls experience oppression and inequality in a homogeneous way. Oppression may be compounded by their sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity. Despite there being a broad understanding that women and girls with diverse SOGIEs are at heightened risk of violence due to multiple and intersecting factors, there is limited evidence and documented practice of responses to this violence. This learning brief assembles resources regarding response that originate from a wide pool of actors including UN agencies, INGOs, World Bank and other Non-humanitarian sources.

Millions of women and girls are unable to manage their menstrual cycle in a dignified, healthy way. The onset of menstruation (or periods as they can be known) is a new phase and can bring with it new risks to the lives of adolescent girls. Many girls face stigma, harassment and social exclusion during menstruation. Gender inequality, discrimination, social norms, cultural taboos, poverty and lack of basic services like toilets and sanitary products can all cause menstrual health and hygiene needs to go unmet. When this happens it restricts women and girls’ mobility and personal choices. It affects attendance in school and participation in community life. It also compromises their safety, causing additional stress and anxiety. These challenges are particularly acute in humanitarian crises. Period poverty is the lack of access to menstrual hygiene information, products, and toilets- forcing women and girls to risk their health, and miss out on education and employment opportunities. ...

While gender equality intersects with various system-wide priorities and actors, as seen above, this guidance note focuses on the complementarities specifically between the IASC GenCap Senior Gender Advisers and the GBV Area of Responsibility (AoR) Regional Advisers and Field GBV Coordinators with a view to guide these actors towards collaborative approaches that will foster common accountability to gender equality and GBV prevention, risk mitigation and response at the operational level. The guidance note has been developed through collaboration between GenCap management, UNFPA Headquarters and the GBV AoR.
