Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Myanmar and the Gendered Impact of its Ethnic Conflicts - HRC August 2019
29 Aug, 2019
Conflicts impact different genders differently. Myanmar is no exception to this rule. The Mission found the gendered impact of Myanmar’s conflicts to be multi-faceted, while invariably taking a heavy toll on women and girls. In northern Myanmar, women and girls have borne the brunt of violations, including sexual and gender-based violence, as well as a wide spectrum of violations of their basic economic and social rights against the backdrop of existing gender inequality. In Rakhine, Rohingya women have been subjected to grave sexual and gender-based violence, including gang rape, rape and mutilation. Their situation is exacerbated by gender inequality and wide-spread discrimination against Rohingya, affecting rehabilitation and redress.
Finding Ways and Means to Deliver Gender-based Violence Programming in Hostile Environments - GBV AoR Helpdesk 2023
16 Oct, 2023
This learning brief discusses a range of strategies and methods humanitarian actors can use to support and sustain GBV response and prevention programming in hostile contexts. It outlines what ‘hostile contexts’ refers to in this paper, and why it is important for GBV program managers and service providers to be able to identify and adapt to rapid or incremental increases in hostility in humanitarian environments, which are likely to adversely impact the implementation of GBV prevention and response programming. The paper discusses some of the risks women and girls face in these high-risk environments and concludes with several key considerations for GBV specialists.

UNFPA Case Study: Exploring GBV Risk Mitigation in Cash Assistance in Iraq and Colombia
26 Sep, 2023
From 2022-2023, UNFPA and the Global Women’s Institute (GWI) at George Washington University undertook operational research in Iraq and Colombia with the goal of developing proxy indicators for mitigating GBV risk to women who receive cash assistance. Proxy indicators for detecting GBV risks to women in cash assistance offer a safe way for non-GBV specialist cash and/or M&E actors to monitor risk without causing inadvertent individual discloures of violence. This case study explores the findings of the operational field research and its implications for UNFPA’s Indicators for GBV Risk Mitigation in Cash Assistance with Supporting Guidance. Key Finding #1: Asking women about their risk mitigation strategies, rather than their opinions on the risks associated with cash, appeared to reduce their response bias and revealed some of the risks they encountered within their communities, households, and/or intimate partnerships when accessing or using cash.
