It is generally accepted that the prevalence of sexual violence is underreported almost everywhere in the world. This is an inevitable result of survivors’ well-founded anxiety about the potentially harmful social, physical, psychological and/or legal consequences of disclosing their experience of sexual violence. In emergency situations, which are characterized by instability, insecurity, fear, dependence and loss of autonomy, as well as a breakdown of law and order, and widespread disruption of community and family support systems, victims of sexual violence may be even less likely to disclose incidents.
Child and Adolescent Survivors and GBV Localization: A Webinar of the GBV AoR Localization Task Team
On October 22, 2019 from 8:00-9:30 am (EST) , the Localization Task Team of the Gender-Based Violence Area of Responsibility (GBV AoR) will be hosting a webinar entitled, “GBV Localization and Young Survivors in Humanitarian Contexts.” Featuring the work of the Child and Adolescent Survivor Initiative (CASI), this webinar will examine how localization can be effectively be promoted within the context of prevention, response and coordination initiatives for young survivors of sexual violence in emergency settings. CASI staff and partners in the field will share examples of good practice as well as challenges and lessons learned. Presenters will also discuss linkages between their work and the overall emphasis on localization that exists within the GBV and Child Protection Areas of Responsibility as well as the humanitarian sector as a whole. Webinar: Global Mapping Study on GBV Localization
On October 31, 2019 from 8:00-9:30 am (EST), the Localization Task Team of the Gender-Based Violence Area of Responsibility (GBV AoR) will be hosting a webinar entitled, “Global Mapping Study on GBV Localization: A Review of Key Findings and Implications.” This study was conducted from February- March 2019 by CARE and ActionAid International, as co-leads of the GBV AoR Localization Task Team, and involved 45 key informant interviews as well as an analysis of quantitative data sources. The purpose of this study was to examine the issue of GBV localization in humanitarian contexts, with a particular focus on the role that women and women-led organizations play in the area of GBV prevention, response and coordination initiatives.
