GBV in Tigray The Gender-Based Violence Area of Responsibility (GBV AoR) continues to be alarmed by reports of increasing violence against women and girls – including harrowing accounts of sexual violence– because of conflict and insecurity in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Though we know gender-based violence (GBV) can be prevented, GBV continues to be present in every conflict, crisis and disaster because of gender inequalities that persist across the globe. That this pattern would repeat in Tigray is not a surprise, but is extremely worrisome. The GBV AoR brings together non-governmental organisations, UN agencies, and others to prevent and respond to GBV. The GBV AoR Community of Practice with JLI/SVRI Faith & GBV Hub, the Institute for Research into Superdiversity (IRiS) at the University of Birmingham and EQUISTY Gender Lab invites you to a webinar to explore and exchange information with GBV practitioners on how to better understand how religion, faith, and spirituality can shape GBV survivors’ resilience, recovery, wellbeing and vulnerability. This webinar will provide a platform for learning exchange and examine the involvement of faith concerns in GBV service provision and make suggestions for how the humanitarian sector might respond. Speakers will discuss the impact of religion on GBV survivor’s experiences and discuss interventions that might inform future GBV policy and practice to support survivors in humanitarian and forced migration contexts. A three-day workshop brought together GBV and CVA actors in Burundi in October 2019, using tools that have been developed at a global level over the past few years. The workshop aimed to contextualize these tools, identify good practices being rolled out in existing projects in Burundi and to draft a common workplan among CVA and protection actors. This session will use mainly South Sudan as a case study to learn good practices, challenges and gaps of GBV risk mitigation into WASH especially in the HPC. South Sudan WASH cluster has been leading GBV risk mitigation into the HPC work in several years and considered as one of the best practices across. Some example from Afghanistan or other context may be presented.
