GBV AoR (Area of Responsibility) Advocacy Note for Cabo Delgado
24 Aug, 2021
Cabo Delgado currently has over 730,000 displaced people, in need of humanitarian assistance. Displacement has been exacerbated since March 2021 by continued attacks by non-State armed groups (NSAGs) in communities in Palma district. More recently, clashes between the NSAG and local forces were reported in Muidumbe district; as a result, community members, including women and children were reported missing, and others killed. According to International Organization for Migration (IOM) there is continued movement of people to Ibo, Pemba, Mueda, Montepuez, Nangade, Ancuabe, and Chiure by boat, bus, and foot, respectively. Civilians have been exposed to human rights abuses. Women and girls are at risk of gender-based violence including sexual violence, and abduction. In focus group discussions held with women and girls, sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, child marriage and abductions were raised as major concerns as families struggle to cope with the current displacement situatio...

UNFPA CVA Activities in Palestine
30 Aug, 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic increased the risk of gender-based violence (GBV) for women and girls in Palestine. Women reported to UNFPA that diminished economic opportunities and financial stress significantly contributed to this increased risk. In response, UNFPA provided vouchers to respond to the urgent needs of economically vulnerable families and women at risk of GBV in Gaza and East Jerusalem. Beneficiaries reported high satisfaction rates in the post- distribution monitoring. In Gaza, 97% of beneficiaries reported that the program had a positive impact on their psychological well-being.
UNFPA CVA Activities in Indonesia
30 Aug, 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic heavily impacted sex workers in Indonesia: their incomes decreased dramatically, they encountered greater difficulty accessing healthcare, and many of them could not access the government cash assistance that was set up to help Indonesians during the pandemic. This CVA pilot provided cash assistance for transportation directly to female sex workers (FSWs) living with HIV so that they could access antiretroviral (ARV) therapy at health service centres. It was implemented by the Indonesian Organization for Social Change (OPSI), a national network of sex workers that is trusted and well- known by sex workers at district levels.
UNFPA CVA Activities in Bangladesh
30 Aug, 2021
UNFPA found that facility-based deliveries by women in refugee camps in Cox’s Bazaar were low (35%), which is linked to increased maternal mortality. In addition, undernourishment among pregnant women in this community increased their risk of poor pregnancy outcomes such as obstructed labor and premature and low birth weight newborns. From September 2018 to August 2019, UNFPA provided vouchers to encourage antenatal care visits and facility-based deliveries. Participatory assessments and feedback mechanisms, financial risk mitigation such as the use of QR codes for voucher tracking, and ongoing outreach by community health workers contributed to the success of the voucher assistance as part of a broader humanitarian sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) programme.
