Gender-Based Violence, Girls’ and Women’s Rights in the Central Sahel - Summary Report

Plan International, Care International, UNFPA and the GBV AoR1 organized a virtual event on 16 October 2020 at 3:30 PM CEST prior to the Ministerial Round Table on Central Sahel. The event aimed to (i) amplify the voices and priorities of girls from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger offering an unique opportunity to learn from first-hand-experience and receive recommendations from the affected girls2 , (ii) draw attention to the critical challenges to preventing and responding to GBV from women local groups3 and advocate for global solidarity around GBV, (iii) motivate governmental actors and donors4 to commit to strengthen the prevention, risk mitigation and response to GBV, raising the profile of the Call to Action on the protection of GBV in emergencies (CtA GBV) and ensuring the rights of women and girls are central to humanitarian action and across the triple nexus.

Plan International, Care International, UNFPA et le GBV AoR1 ont organisé un événement virtuel le 16 octobre 2020 à 15h30 CEST avant la table ronde ministérielle sur le Sahel central. L’événement visait à (i) amplifier les voix et les priorités des filles du Burkina Faso, du Mali et du Niger2 en offrant une occasion unique d’apprendre de l’expérience de première main et de recevoir des recommandations des filles touchées, (ii) d’attirer l’attention sur les défis critiques à la prévention et à la réponse à la VBG de la part des groupes locaux de femmes et plaider pour la solidarité mondiale autour de la VBG3 , (iii) motiver les acteurs gouvernementaux et les donateurs4 à s’engager à renforcer la prévention, l’atténuation des risques et la réponse à la VBG, en rehaussant le profil de l’Appel à l’action sur la la protection de la VBG dans les situations d’urgence (AaA VBG) et la garantie des droits des femmes et des filles sont au cœur de l’action humanitaire et à travers le triple lien. ...

“For me, the justice is the truth”[1]: Strengthening Access to Justice for GBV Survivors Access to justice is a human right and is also key to the realization of other rights, including the right to live free from violence, discrimination and inequality. Upholding women and girls’ rights to access justice after GBV is a one element of multisectoral GBV programming in emergencies. Minimum actions for promoting justice and legal aid for GBV survivors are set in the Interagency Minimum Standards for Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies Programming as minimum standard number 10. Survivor-centered justice systems offer a range of potential benefits for GBV survivors. They can provide protection and remedy, and support healing and recovery of GBV survivors and their families.
