Country Overview

Zimbabwe

Climatic shocks, prevailing macro- economic challenges, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and the socio-economic impact of strict containment measures have left an estimated 6.8 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in 2021.

Protection risks are heightened by the deteriorating Zimbabwean multi-hazard context. In 2022, violence and discrimination directly related to multiple crises faced by Zimbabwe is expected to continue to negatively impact on pre-existing gender and social inequalities, and exacerbate gender based violence, as well as sexual exploitation and abuse.

In 2021, the National GBV Hotline recorded a 16% calls increase compared to the same period in 2020 and a 74% increase compared with the same period in 2019. 89% of total reported cases were reported by women and girls.

Access to GBV risk mitigation and response services remains constrained in the Zimbabwe multi-hazard context. The ZIMVAC rural assessment (July 2021) indicates that over 70% of households do not have access to GBV services and of those that sought help, 32% reported the services as being unsatisfactory. GBV multi-sectoral services remain fragmented, and often limited to provincial and district level, while the existing facilities are unable to meet the demand from GBV survivors in remote and hard to reach areas.
